It's Back-to-School Time for Hundreds of Older Adults
The Institute for Learning in Retirement offers classes for lifelong learners.

It's back-to-school season. For most people, that means youngsters heading back to local elementary, high schools and colleges. But for about 400 older adults, all lifelong learners in the New Haven area, back to school means picking their fall semester classes at the Institute for Learning in Retirement of Greater New Haven.

"We're offering 45 classes this semester," said Nick Maiorino, ILR president. "When people review the offerings, they'll find classes to inform, challenge and delight them."

ILR is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, said Maiorino, a member for about 10 years. Founded in 1989, the organization is run completely by volunteers. The group offers classes for adults who love to learn. Programs are taught by experts in their fields, former professors and others who are well qualified to address the course matter. Some sessions are offered at venues in Hamden, Woodbridge, Orange and other places.Other lectures and discussions are offered on Zoom.

Registration starts Sept. 9 and classes start a week later. Classes range from a discussion about Yale University and slavery, to the Legend of Frankenstein, to making no-knead bread, to discussions of current events and the neuroscience of sleep. Those who want to learn how to play canasta, bridge or mahjong also will find a place to learn.

All of the classes are listed at the Institute's website, www.ilrnh.org.
"We like to say we offer classes from anatomy through music to zoology," said Maiorino.

ILR sessions run through December. Membership in the organization is $45 and most classes cost $10 to $15. The organization also accepts donations.

More information about ILR and its courses is available on its website, www.ilrnh.org, or by calling (203) 747-9675. The organization also has a Facebook page.
